Ionic liquid ferrofluid electrospray with EMIM-NTf2 and ferrofluid mode studies with FerroTec EFH-1 in a non- uniform magnetic field

چکیده
An electrospray ion source was operated using a newly designed ionic liquid ferrofluid based on the ionic liquid EMIM-NTf2. The magnetic properties of the fluid were exploited to create self-assembling array of peaks on the fluid surface, which were then amplified using an electric field, eventually causing ions to be emitted from the tip of each peak in the instability. A beam current of 72 micro-Amps was measured from a five-peak array subject to extraction voltage of 2750 V. In a separate experiment, modal patterns in the surface of a ferrofluid subject to a Rosensweig instability were measured in non-uniform fields created by permanent magnets. These measured wavelengths were shown to agree well with a hypothesis put forth by Rupp where the magnetic force is treated similarly to the gravitational force in the classical dispersion relation.

Species measurements in the beam of an ionic liquid ferrofluid capillary electrospray source under magnetic stress
Three solutions of an ionic liquid ferrofluid (ILFF) using 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (EMIM-NTf2) as the carrier liquid were emitted from a capillary electrospray source and the resulting beam was measured using a time-of-flight mass spectrometer (TOF-MS). The solutions had 3.04, 5.98, and 8.80 wt% iron oxide nanoparticles making them susceptible to magnetic f...

The mixing of Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids in a magnetic micro-mixer was studied numerically using ferrofluid. The mixing process was performed in a three-dimensional steady-state micro-mixer. A magnetic source was mounted at the entrance of the micro-channel to oscillate the magnetic particles. The effects of electric current, inlet velocity, size of magnetic particles, and non-Newtonia...

Ferrofluid spin-up flow is studiedwithin a sphere subjected to a uniform rotatingmagnetic field from two surrounding spherical coils carrying sinusoidally varying currents at right angles and 901 phase difference. Ultrasound velocimetry measurements in a full sphere of ferrofluid shows no measureable flow. There is significant bulk flow in a partially filled sphere (1–14 mm/s) of ferrofluid or ...
متن کاملUnderstanding Ferrofluid Spin-Up Flows in Rotating Uniform Magnetic Fields
Ferrofluid spin-up flow has been studied in finite height cylinders and spheres subjected to a uniform rotating magnetic field. Ultrasound measurements in finite height cylinders with a free surface show the presence of surface driven flows as well as bulk flows. In finite height cylinders with a cover, only bulk flows exist. Ultrasound measurements in fully filled spheres of ferrofluid give ne...
